Film Analysis The Neon Demon - 1270 Words

It was a chilly, blustery midnight in October. The phone ring was getting louder, signalling the witching hour eventually came. The autumn wind was forcefully blowing against the glass window as if it was attempting to break the window to see what was inside a dark silent room. In the dark room, I was uncontrollably thinking of the movie The Neon Demon which I’d just watched. My brain was ceaselessly working, visualizing each scene to find its definite explanation. I admit watching The Neon Demon isn’t an easy task since the movie itself doesn’t aim to entertain people. Rather, it pushes viewers in a position where they must respond to what they have visually witnessed. The Neon Demon follows Jesse, a sixteen-year-old orphan girl who†¦show more content†¦Likewise, falling in love with Dean, Jesse continually met him although he was unable to support her financially and professionally. But the pleasurable feeling about a romantic couple that viewers have suddenly disappears and is replaced by horror thriller genre as the movie nearly reaches the climax. Specifically, Jesse was killed and eaten by three women, and her eyeball was digested by one of them. Clearly, by combing the two diametrically opposed genres of drama and horror, the movie The Neon Demon creates emotional tension among viewers, putting them into shock immediately. In addition to applying mixed genres, the movie The Neon Demon also utilizes stylistic techniques, a melodrama genre, to signal the profound transformation of the protagonist, Jesse from an innocent sweet girl to a narcissistic character. Specifically, the changing of light, color, and soundtracks collaborated remarks Jesse’s sharply shifting personality. For example, Jesse’s naivety was represented by the bright light, white color, and lovely tinkling sounds. As Jesse progressed into the modern fashion world, the light and color were getting darker and eventually turned into black. To be mo re specific, in the first catwalk, Jesse was centralized in the illuminated blue pyramid surrounded by the black background playing in heavily intense sounds. Gender Roles In The Movie Showgirls Essay Example For Students

Gender Roles In The Movie Showgirls Essay Showgirls is a definite backlash to the typical womans role in society. It is very interesting to me that a movie with this message is set in a normally deviant setting, when it is trying to portray the strength of a woman. I feel this is the reason that many woman did not see the film. They are offended, disgusted, and maybe even a little jealous of strippers. Strippers are able to be in control of the customers at all times. They have the power to switch the standard gender roles. For a moment, I thought differently when Nomi was forced to give a lap dance, but she turned the situation around when she gained part control over Crystals man. I admire the character Nomi for her strong will, but I am also disgusted by her. She uses every single woman stereotype to get her way. She flirts constantly, wears skimpy or no clothing, she sleeps with Crystals man as a retaliation toward a woman who has more prestige than herself, and many times during the movie she showed a definite fake lack of intelligence around the opposite sex. I was also offended that every single scene with two woman in it was filled with so many lesbian connotations. During scenes with Nomi and Molly, Nomi was batting her eyelashes constantly at Molly. She even came on to Crystal at times to try and gain power in the dance world. It was not relatable to anyone at all, except for perhaps the Las Vegas dancers who have experienced this type of life. The men in Showgirls definitely had control over the women. There was no reversal in standard gender roles in these clubs. The men even acted stereotypically in revelling in their overpowerment of the norm. Also, besides the instance when Nomi beats up the rock star, men use and abuse their status over these scantily clad women throughout the movie. Nomi tried to gain control in certain situations by seducing the people she wanted to have power over, but they always turned around and Knocked her back down to her stereotypical deviant status. Also, when the rock star was part of a gang rape with Molly as the vicim, no one even thought of calling the police. The men patted Nomi on the head and told her they would get Molly enough money to start a shop instead of acknowledging Mollys feelings in this life shattering event. Yet, when Nomi did seek revenge for Mollys rape, she had to leave and give up her career. The gender roles in Showgirls are all very stereotypical. The women are beautiful, young and barely dressed. The men are suave and handsome with controll over everything. It was a powerful film about a womans fight against society, but view viewers are going to notice the message because of the context it was filmed in. Many teenage boys watched Showgirls over and over again. They saw only the sexy dancers and the sex scenes,  they didnt even look for a deeper message. In that sense, I feel the writers failed in portraying a womans struggle in society in a relatable fashion. They put too much concentration into the naked dancers and the sexual tension. Therefore, if the writers were trying to portray the womens plight so that men can understand it, they failed miserably. Give men a movie with exotic dancers and they will say, What plot? Women can appreciate Nomis struggle and even sympathize with her at times if they ever get bored enough to demean themselves and rent the movie with the naked woman on the cover.

Varying Sentence Structure

To add interest, improve flow, and illustrate your sophistication as a writer, always try to vary the sentence structure within paragraphs. Many writers get into the Sally, Dick, and Jane rut, where their sentences are simple constructions of subject-verb-object. This makes for dull reading†¦ but it also can insult the intelligence of the average reader, who is capable of processing information that is presented in sentences of varying lengths and diverse constructions. We’ll use an example from Atlas Shrugged. (Everyone is always suspicious that I harbor Objectivist tendencies when I gush over Ayn Rand, however, this interest was abandoned long ago. Ayn Rand’s writing, and her obsession with perfection, is still to be admired. Sure, she was a little bats, but her writing is incredible.) The following excerpt is written using the same sentence structure, over and over: Her leg was sculptured by the tight sheen of the stocking. Its long line ran straight over an arched instep to the tip of a high-heeled pump. It had a feminine elegance that seemed out of place in the dusty train car. It was also oddly incongruous with the rest of her. Ayn Rand’s original: Her leg, sculptured by the tight sheen of the stocking, its long line running straight, over an arched instep, to the tip of a foot in a high-heeled pump, had a feminine elegance which seemed out of place in the dusty train car and oddly incongruous with the rest of her. While this type of writing contains too much flourish for article writing, and the sentence presents information in a more complex manner than you would want to, notice how the description joins like elements into a seamless whole without butchering it into jarring pieces (just like Dagny’s leg is a long, unbroken line). Whether you’re writing about Dagny Taggart’s sexy games, or the health benefits of carrots, you can still create flow that makes reading and absorbing information interesting. Carrots are healthy. They contain large amounts of vitamin A. Eating carrots is good for your eyes. There is some evidence that eating carrots will help you see in the dark. Better sentence structure: Carrots, which contain large amounts of vitamin A, are extremely healthy. In fact, carrots are great for eye health, and there is some evidence that eating carrots will help you see in the dark. Learning new ways to construct sentences is as simple as opening up a magazine, reading from a respected online publication, or picking up your favorite classic. Of course, you should always adapt your writing style for your topic, your audience, and clarity. However, what you learn from others can always be distilled into basic principles to use to improve your own skills.

Tangled Essays - Tangled Characters, Rapunzel, Mother Gothel

Tangled Essays - Tangled Characters, Rapunzel, Mother Gothel Tangled English 011 29 March 2013 Tangled Have you ever wondered what Disney films are really showing to children? In the article Someday My Prince Will Come, Marcia Lieberman explains the negative impact on children from classic Disney films. The negative messages Lieberman talks about are the girl always depends on the hero, the willingness to change themselves, and the idea that if you are beautiful you get through life easy. However, the Disney film Tangled defies this article. Tangled starts off the same as any other Disney film; a nice, strong, brave man saves the damsel in distress, but then it changes by not following the clich, negative messages and sends out a positive message. Although Tangled and Cinderella have a similar plot, Tangled portrays a better gender message for young children because of the untraditional role reversal and the inspirational message. The plot of Tangled is just like any other plot that Disney comes up with. Girl gets into some kind of trouble; handsome male comes to save her, and they live happily ever after. But, the difference with Tangled is that it starts off as a clich, but drives away from the fairytale norm. In the movie, theres a magical flower that everyone desires to have. The queen of the kingdom had a special baby girl named Rapunzel. She has had magical powers since birth. Her long blonde hair glows when she sings and has the ability to heal all wounds. However, things take a turn when Mother Gothel kidnaps Rapunzel just to stay young. Rapunzel was locked in the tower and could never leave. Until one day Flynn Rider steals a crown from his partners and is forced to run towards the tower. Not knowing if anyone was there, he climbs up into the tower and meets Rapunzel for the first time. The two go out on a wild adventure that would make them closer than ever. During their journey they both learn to gr ow more into each other. Throughout the movie Tangled shows a reversal of roles that strays away from the traditional story of damsel in distress. Classic Disney movies have a big part of gender roles, which are a set of behaviors that indicate, specifically the image projected by a person that identifies his or her femaleness or maleness. Stereotypical gender roles in Disney movies teach individuals behavioral and associational patterns that illustrate appropriate behavior for each sex and provides a way to predict the outcome or fate according to sex. Rapunzel is a princess, who was kidnapped by Mother Gothel. She lived her entire life locked inside a hidden tower, but she is no damsel in distress. She is a girl with very long golden hair. She is a girl who fills her days with art, books, and imagination. Rapunzels true destiny lies outside of the lonely tower. She always obeyed Mother Gothel by keeping her magical hair hidden. Flynn Rider is a thief, who discovers Rapunzel in the tower. He is a tall and well-built with short, dark hair. He is an experienced thief; he skilled in escaping the authorities, hiding out, and steal ing right from peoples noses. He later becomes the husband of Rapunzel. Tangled is a much different movie compared to Cinderella even though they were made by the same company. Cinderella has a message of that a woman should be abused from most of her life until she is saved. The woman should be dependent on someone else instead of herself. In Cinderella she depends on her fairy godmother to save her at first, and then she depends on the prince to save her instead of working on her own to save herself. In Tangled Rapunzel is very independent and even is able to leave her tower. She rescues Flynn multiple times throughout the movie. She shows that women can easily be independent and even be the rescuer. Additionally, the focus on beauty sends another negative message to young girls. Beauty is associated with goodness, and ugliness is associated with evil. Rapunzel is beautiful and sweet. For example, she was able to help the men at the bar and think back and show emotion by asking them if they ever had a dream. She was not
